#Valentine be mine

What to do on valentines for your special someone? I have a few ideas. Of course you can treat your special someone to that surprise I love you gift anytime of the month. Start working up to it early! Why not start by coming to Wolf Sanctuary of PA February 4th from 730pm to 10pm for an evening of classical guitar and a bonfire to warm your spirits. Listen to the music and if we are lucky the wolves will howl a sweet serenade of love for those listening. You will certainly get goosebumps as I always do. Come join in the fun! Friday night block party, Saturday night Chili Cook-off and Winter Wonderland Carnival and Sunday Skating.

This event just keeps growing. Come enjoy the warn hometown charm of Lititz with it's fabulous food and lovely accommodations. Stroll the streets and take in the amazing sights of fresh hand carved ice sculptures. Then pop into Cafe Chocolate for a warmer upper, the turbo. YUM! If your pleasure is a cooler beverage, maybe the Bull's Head is more your speed. With over 50 beers to temp your taste buds you can not miss. The tomato pie cafe is just across the street from Wilbur Chocolate, and their food is a treat for lunch. Last but not least Scooters, were the chefs know how to cook a delectable rare steak. Of course they can cook it more if you must.

Anyway, my point is this is going to be great fun! I hope to see you there.

Pumkin pie bread gluten free

I can't tell you if this is the best receipe for you. I only know that I love to cook and I keep trying different things. I hardly make the same thing the same way twice. Since that is the case I have started trying to write things down.

I had a number of pumpkins from my garden, so I had to do it....pumpkin bread. I looked at several receipes then made my own. Shall we give it a try? Be sure to tell me what you think. :)

2 cup sweet rice flour (you can use all sweet rice and skip coconut)
1/2 cup coconut flour
1/2 cup tapioca cornstarch
5 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon xanthan gum
4 large eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup orange juice
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 to 2 cups fresh drained pumpkin
Gluten-free non-stick cooking spray

Preheat your oven to 350°F, and place your rack in the middle of the oven. Spray two 9-by-5-inch loaf pans lightly with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, salt, and xanthan gum. In separate bowl, mix together eggs, oil and orange juice. Add sugar and pumpkin. Blend until thoroughly combined.

Add pumpkin mixture to dry ingredients. Mix until ingredients are thoroughly combined and a smooth batter forms (use medium-high speed on a stand mixer).

Divide batter evenly between prepared loaf pans. Bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.

Remove pans from oven and place on a wire rack. Allow bread to cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Remove bread from pans and place directly on wire rack. Allow bread to cool completely before slicing. Store bread wrapped in plastic wrap at room temperature for 3 to 5 days, or wrap and freeze for up to 3 months.

By the way...this is a very moist bread.

Vegan Brownies - THE BEST

These brownies are cakey, very moist and super yummy!

Ingredients

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar - I use Florida Crystals
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup coconut milk
1 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2.In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Pour in water, vegetable oil and vanilla; mix until well blended. Spread evenly in a 8x11 inch baking pan.

3.Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in preheated oven, until the top is no longer shiny. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting into squares with a plastic knife.

Acorn Squash Cake

3 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups packed squash (you can use pumpkin, acorn, butter nut squash)
1 cup oil
3 cups sugar
3 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degree. Mix dry ingrediants together, mix wet ingrediants together, then mix everything together. I use several small pans, or a bundt cake or really whatever kind of cake you want to make. The cooking time varies depending on what kind of pan you use. I always start with 25 minutes and go from there. Your cake could take up to 50 minutes. This is a heavy cake, but very good and usually very moist.

I use an orange or maple glaze for the topping. Or you can just dust it with powdered sugar.

Get Away to Lancaster PA

Crazy days. The todo list just seems to be getting longer. Everything seems to be important and I just want to get away. I know it's not just me. How do I escape? I walk out to my back yard and listen to the sounds of nature. I walk back to the Wolf Sanctuary of PA and I watch the wolves play and sleep. Birds over head and the breeze through the leaves. The Speedwell Forge Nature Park is just a two minute walk from the house and Middle Creek preserve a fifteen minute drive.

Come to Lancaster PA and relax! Stay a couple days. Leave your work at home and stroll the quiet grounds of Speedwell Forge. Go out and shop for the day and come back in the early evening and relax in the library or Parlor. Let the tic toc of my 1903 Grandfather clock sweep your troubles away while you snack on homemade cookies or other yummy treats made fresh the same day.

Potato Soup vegan by Dawn

It's after breakfast. The guests have gone off to do a wolf tour at the sanctuary, and I? We I am in the kitchen washing dishes. We else would I be? I somehow managed to parboil four extra potatoes in preparation for today's breakfast. Hummmm, what should be done with those. I don't want shred and freeze them. What to do?

Potato soup! I scanned through several recipes then made...potatoes in a pot.

Four potatoes cooked diced
2 cups vegetable broth
One-half zuccinni
2 tbls nutritional yeast flakes
2 tbls rosemary
salt to taste
1.5 cups coconut milk
2 tbls nut cream, (I had raw razel nuts and almonds in the freezer so I ran them through the food processor)
Mixed all of this up in the pot brought it to a boil, then poured it into a crook pot. I will cook it for a few hours on high, than have lunch.

Let's see how it turns out shall we? :)

I have been trying for I don't know how long to come up with a crepe that would not disintegrate when I try to flip it. There have been many frustrating moments during breakfast time when it just did not work. Yes I am one of those try it when I am serving it kind of people. Have you made this before? Nope you are the first and last. On to the next never done before by me meal. But not always..and this is one of those times when I am writing it down. So here it is!

Vegan Gluten free crepes
One large or two very ripe bananas
1 3/4 Cups coconut milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla

1 tablespoon agave nectar

2 cups gluten free flour (I use King Arthur)

4 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon all spice

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

mix by hand, and cook as you would any other crepe...just kidding

Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/2 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.
Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot or store until later, warm up in fry pan and serve for desert with fruit and better than cream cheese

Okay, I am back. After the meat delivery I went out for the evening with Darin. Thank you Don for the donation of steaks, filets and hamburgers. The wolves will love their meat sickels in this heat.

Now back to the receipe. I am going to bake this today, and will let you know how it turns out. I think I will so pecan this time around. I will let you know how it turns out.

Bananas

I have been experimenting with gluten free foods for some time now. I don't particularly like the rice flour texture. So I have been trying pecan meal and almond meal, cocnut flour and pototato flour, potato starch and corn starch, corn flour and well you get the picture. So I ran accross this little stand on the way to Hoovers. I had to go look up the name, Garden of eden. They had very ripe bananas at a VERY reasonable price. Yes I bought a couple. ;) Got home ran them all through the food processor and now I have to cook them.

I am not going to cook them all. Some are destined to become part of a lovely mango banana sorbet, which I shall share with my guests Friday morning. The rest will be Grain Free banana bread.

I will need almond and/or pecan meal, coconut oil, honey, eggs bananas, baking soda, salt and a dried fuit. I think I will use pomegranate.

Gitta run, someone is dropping off meat for the wolves. More to come!

I never get enough of what these artists can do with a gourd. Come see for yourself! Smucker's Gourd Farm, 317 Springville Rd, Kinzers PA 17535. This is in the heart of the Amish Country so come prepared to see the sights and enjoy the drive. Be sure to stop in for a bite to eat too.

MY Macaroni Salad for mom's day

1 pound Rotini, boil per box instructions,3 tbls mayonnaise, about 2 tsp mustard, a squeeze or two of honey, a few dashes white balsamic vinegar, three very thin slices of red onion diced, mix it all together and refrigerate until ready to serve. Yum. It's that easy. I just made this up, your turn. :)

A gluten-free twist on a classic: Lemon Poppy Custard Torte served with an orange-blossom honey glaze accented with a cinnamon-laced PA Dutch apple butter.

Lemon Poppy Torte
3/4 cup GF Corn Flour
3/4 cup GF Corn Starch
1/4 cup Tapioca Flour
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp. Sea Salt
1 tsp. Xanthan Gum
1/2 cup Coconut Milk (or milk of your choice)
2 tsp. Lemon Juice
1/2 cup Vege Oil, you could probably use a nut oil here too
1 cup Granulated Sugar
3 Large Eggs or egg replacement. I use Ener-g
1 tbsp. grated Lemon Peel
1tbsp. Poppy Seeds
1tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract

1. Place rack in middle of oven. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly grease the sides of a 9 inch spring pan, place parchment paper on the bottom and close the spring. Set aside.
2. In small bowl, whisk together corn flour, cornstarch, tapioca flour, baking powder, salt and xanthan gum; set aside. In measuring cup mix together milk and lemon juice. Set aside.
3. In medium bowl of electric mixer, beat oil, sugar, lemon peel, poppy seeds and vanilla on medium speed until well blended. Beat in milk-lemon mixture until well blended. With mixer on low speed, gradually beat in cornstarch mixture until well blended. Pour into prepared spring pan.
4. Bake 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes on wire rack and release the spring.

You can turn this into a Vegan treat with a few tweaks and use agave or maple syrup with the apple butter.

Mud Sales 2011

Coming to buy soomething really big or a whole lot of something small? Are you traveling with a trailer and are not sure where you will be leaving it when you are tooling around Lancaster County. We have enough space for you to park your trailer. If you are a guest of Speedwell Forge Bed and Breakfast you can park your trailer easily. Go out and tour the area, have a wonderful meal at one of the many local restaurants come home get a good nights sleep have a filling breakfast then off to the mud sale with that trailer in tow.

Local Volunteer Fire Companies raise funds through what have affectionately come to be known as 'Mud Sales' Fire company sales have been a regular event here in Lancaster County since the mid-1960's. These auctions help local volunteer fire companies raise much-needed funds.

The late Winter and early Spring dates work out best for local farmers because they have more time available before the Spring planting. Since many of the items are sold outside during potentially muddy Spring conditions, these events have affectionately become known as "mud sales".

Often auctions are held both inside and outside simultaneously. Sometimes numerous auctions take place at the same time throughout the grounds.

The items sold vary from auction to auction and include a wide variety of donated goods and consignment merchandise. Auctioned items often include furniture, craft items, quilts, building materials, livestock, buggies and carriages, tools, farming supplies and equipment, garden items, and much more. Plus, lots of good food. Come and enjoy!

Moving On

A friend, and guest of this property has lost her father this past night. We grieve and hold her close in our thoughts as she travels this day to stay with us. Memories of my father's loss flood back into me as I feel for this woman. I met her first as a guest of my B&B. She found her way here to meet our Wolves. A lover of wolves, and of all creatures big and small. Stand with me and hold vigil for we have all felt this pain of loss. Family or dear friend....

Moving on...I am weary of this body, and this plain holds no gravity on my essence. My family is strong and though they may weep, their strength will carry on. It is time, and the call has gotten to strong to deny. I bid you be well as I start my new journey or should I say adventure.

Left behind...and we will talk amongst ourselves of happy times and quiet laughter. We will miss those eyes of light and the magic that was your embrace. Oh daddy I do love you. Smile on me now as I smile back at you though tears of my own loss and grief. I know you remember as I remember you. No more pain you are free. Take flight and be what you always were -- a star. I will see you in the heavens as I look up at night.

Lost Keys

I got to go away for a day. Yes it happens. Darin and I went to visit his parents in Snowshoe. It was snowing when we left, we got stuck behind two plows and the ride took considerably longer than anticipated. We go there. Midnight but we were there safe and sound. Why did we go? We had baby birds to deliver for rearing. They are so cute! But I digress. Went to bed around 2am. Got up around 7:30am and relaxed until 2pm. Then home we came. The next morning I started looking for my car keys. Humph, no bob and key in sight. Checked all my purses, bags, coats. That is a task in itself, but to no avail. I have actually lost my car keys, and I had to get to the township to deliver a check. Rita needed it this week! ACK!!! I feel like a kid, having to call my teacher but I did it, I called Rita and apoligized that I would be late. I could use the drop box if I had too. Sigh. Anyway, Joel the key guy saved my butt for a small fee of $212. Okay that was not just for the car key, he did some other stuff for me on my house, which he included in that bill.

So I have never been without my bob and key. Never locked the car door without it, so how was I to know that when you lock the door you can't just open it again with just he key! The alarm is going off and will not stop. I sit there frantically trying to figure this out. I pulled the owners manuel from the glove box but there is no help in this stupid little book of nonsense. The phone starts to ring. So I answer the phone and make a really bad impression on someone wanting information on the B&B and the Wolf Sanctuary. Arg! Why did I answer the phone? I don't KNOW! Anyway, I look at my new droid and well, it helped me find a dealership service tech who kindly told me the error of my ways. Following his instruction I disabled the bleeping car alarm that had at this point brought me almost to tears. But the alarm was off. I am to report to the dealership and get a new bob to go with my new key before trying to lock my car usuing the interrior buttons again. Yes sir! Thank you so much.

Off to the corporate verizon store to get my new phone armed with my old phones numbers. Something the place I bought it from neglected to tell me they could not do. Sigh.

A bit of grocery shopping then home again. All in a day’s work. That's right there is always some life lesson just hiding around the corner. :) I think I will go the other way next time.

Vegan breakfast Quinoa

I do this every day. I go to bed thinking about breakfast. I have a general idea of what I am going to make, bake, cook. 5 a.m. rolls around and my mind starts whirling. Ideas flash in and out confounding me and confusing the breakfast. So many things to make with the ingredients I have stashed in my cabinets and cold storage.

When I went to bed I was envisioning blue berry and cheese blintz for the second coarse. Quinoa molded into a small circle topped with avocado and sweet potato timbale with roasted tomatillo dressing for the third course.

By the time I got to the kitchen at 6 a.m. Breakfast had morphed into Irish oatmeal. A choice of toppings: raw almonds, bananas, apples or boiled sweet potatoes. A cheese blitz dressed with blueberries sauteed in my secret concoction and clementines on the side. ;) Crepes stuffed with quinoa and mango salsa, topped with avocado and warm tomatoes diced with fresh basil and sage. Sweet potatoes completed the plate sweetened with agave nectar.

I have no idea how this happens. But it is the same every morning. Don't ask me what we are having for breakfast. It will most likely change. I can't help myself!

Simply Wacky Cake

2 cups sugar
3 cups flour
6 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon baking powder (heaping)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons vinegar
2/3 cup oil
2 cups water

Place ingredients into one bowl. Mix all all once. Pour into ungreased 9x13 cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

To dress, I used confection's sugar and cocoa! But you can use anything you like!

This is a wonderfully moist cake. ENJOY!

A place to retreat

A place to retreat. We all need one. We all need some time to just be ourselves. To think, ponder, day dream. Some time to regroup and prioritize. What is all important? My brain hurts, and I feel like no one cares. Is that what you are thinking? Think again! Everyone feels this way at one time or another.

I am lucky enough to have my own back yard to walk out in and just sit. Sit there and stare off into space. Literally! The sky is beautifully clear. I lived in Los Angeles years ago, and I missed the night sky. We had only one star. But even that is better than no night sky, right? As I sit here pondering why who what why! I can still see so much more. The moon is rising and the sky no everything around me is filling with it's light. I love to share this space with my guests. Those that would come just to wonder at the peace and quiet. The air is cooling and there is more and more appearing in the night sky. The nights are coming sooner.

I have noticed the need to get away. Leave the drudgery of day to day routine behind for a time. A reconnection. A cleansing of the soul mind body. I am happy I can share my home with those that seek respite.

Zucchini Almond Muffins

Starch free Flour free, yes way!

3 cups grated zucchini
3 eggs, beaten
2 cups almond nut flour
1 cup almond nut meal
1/3 cup melted butter
1/2 cup honey
2 teaspons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon alspice
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix almond flour, meal, butter, honeyu, and zucchini. Add beaten eggs, cinnamon, alspice, salt and baking soda. Mix well. Bake in muffin tins at 350 degrees. I don't use paper cups but you can. Bake for apx 20 minutes or until done. Makes 12 muffins. Take your time, this is different then your usual muffin, there is no flower. usually when the top starts to brown it's ready. This is great with honey butter!

Ephrata Cloister

Have you been to the Ephrata Cloister? What a wonderful tour they have, and what history. What is the Cloister?

One of America's earliest religious communities, the Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Gathered in unique European style buildings, the community consisted of celibate Brothers and Sisters, and a married congregation of families.

At the zenith of the community in the 1740s and 1750s, about 300 members worked and worshiped at the Cloister. Today, the National Historic Landmark is open for tours, special programs, and on-going research opportunities.

It's the end of the 4th Day of July 2010. The sun is setting. In a few hours it will be dark, the lightening bugs will come alive and the bull frogs will sing. Evening birds will voice and trill. Our wolves may join the night sounds for a moment. Then all will be quiet. The day is starting to cool off as the sun lowers itself. Fireworks will be going off tonight in the Coleman Memorial Park at 9pm. I wish everyone a safe and lovely 4th of July. Enjoy your cookout, time with family and friends. Dawn

To Do list

A long time ago, a to do list was put together for me. Yes I had a hand in it, but someone else was the typist. So now I sit in front of the computer at night until the wee hours making my own to do list. I actually get things done on the list. I then add another ten or more things to do.

To do (short version):
Complete new enclosure for wolves.
Cover dig fence in new enclosure for wolves.
Install water lines back at sanctuary for enclosures.
Repair barn back at sanctuary.
Upgrade visitor's center carpet and ceiling.
Clean out barn, first and second floor.
Install doors in barn.
Replace electric in barn.
Create business plan for commercial kitchen.
Renovate (save) stallion pen.
Touch up paint on B&B.
Call Ag re commerical kitchen.
Have larger weddings on Speedwell Forge grounds.
Get started earlier in the morning.
Give up sleep.

This is just to name a few. I am a person possessed with completeing this project before I die. But the project keeps growing. So how do I balance what is important and what just seems important. At what time does it become clear what is important. I will have to think on this. Ahhh, one more thing to add to the list. At least I love what I do, I just am not sure what that is at the end of the day. :)

Lititz PA 4th of July celebration, Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Lititz has the best 4th of July celebration. While I am talking about Lititz let me tell you about the most lovely little park you would ever want to stroll through. Lititz Springs Park a natural spring flows at the head and meanders poetically through the park. Ducks have made a home for the summer. It's just lovely. Every year for well over 100 years a spectacular light show is held in honor of our independence. The town gets super busy with the excitement building until BOOM the event unfolds before you over you. At the end, maybe you seek something refined yet tastefully simple. That is where I come in. Come home to my little slice of heaven. Speedwell Forge with quiet little tree frogs peeping away lightening bugs just starting their own light show evening birds chirping in the summer season. Shuuuu relax outside beside the wolf sanctuary. Listen, they may howl just for you. Talk to them and listen to their secrets.

Gluton Free, Dairy Free

Each night I sit in front of my computer searching for that perfect breakfast. We cater to the allergies. food restrictions and food life style. Food is important. Good food is most important to me. What I feed my guests must be tastefully presented, and taste like more. I recently said that on a face book entry. Well something like that.

Tomorrow we will explore gluten free crepes with asparagus lightly sauteed with vegan hollandaise sauce, cashew creme pana cotta with berries (red and blue) in honor of our veterans and enlisted folk, and homemade granola with diced apples.

Barn renovation

I learn as I go.

I have been talking about this for two years. I want to clean out the barn and use it for fund raisers and indoor activities for my guests. Last year we started cleaning out both the first and second floor of the barn. Not just moving things around but really getting rid of this and that. Can you imagine? I thought the house was bad, but there were things in this barn! STUFF for lack of a better term. I took pictures, I am sure of it. There were things in this barn that I wondered, why? Old stoves, washers, airconditioners, pond pumps, trany cases, cow feeders (the kind the cow would push with his nose to get water), bed frames, boat decks, pvc piping, old empty paint cans, old farm impliments, car seats, hinges. Why was this stuff there, it should have been donated, thrown away or sold! Ahhhhh! There is an old console tv up there with the tube still in it. I know some of us still know about that sort of thing. Right up there with vinal, but I digress.

You think getting rid of "stuff" would be easy. Pull up a dumpster and throw it in. No, I just can't do it. I need to recycle it, sell it, scrap it. Find a good home for what is still in good or reasonably good condition. Maybe even find a new use for it. Like the bed frame. I should find a corner of the yard, place it there and put a raised flower bed in it. I am a bed and breakfast after all. :)

We put siding on the barn and that really helped to bring some color back to the land scape. This was months ago. To tell you the truth there is so much going on here day by day that I would have to look at the bill to tell you when I did that.

Today is a landmark day, my roofers showed up to take a good look see at the material that covers the barn. Old metal sheeting. It is our hope that they can pull out all the nails and screw it all back down. Remove someones idea of sky lights from the west side and make a nice tight structure out of the old 50s style cow barn. She is a beauty for her day. The barn is over 40feet long ok maybe more like 120 feet long. Can someone please come measure my barn. Jeeze!

Gotta run, its 8:30am and I think I here life in the house. Breakfast time! TTFN

I had a good friend for the last 5 years. She was warm and caring with big brown eyes that would melt your heart. She had this way about her. Of course you didn't always know what she was thinking, but when she wanted something YOU KNEW. She would nudge at you, and make these little arf arf vocals, a quiet gurrrrrr. YOU THERE! YOU better pay attention to ME. I was not always patient and I would ask her to move or wait when I was in the kitchen, but I loved her just the same. My little sweet pea I called her from time to time. Always ready to great me and her daddy Darin. She had been feeling a little low for a while now, especially the last few days. She was a grand old lady of 11 1/2. Friday night her wag was less pronounced. Her gurrr a bit quieter. When she greeted me in the morning she didn't wag her tail, only looked up at me as if to say I don't feel good. Leave me sleep a bit longer. When Darin got up shortly after me she asked to be carried down to the first floor, she was hesitant to go down the stairs. Stairs that before she raced up and down in a gleeful sprint. Can't catch me! she would taunt. Darin called Uncle Bill her vet, and took her in at 10:30am. She did not come home. Darin, White Feather and I went back in around, silly I don't remember the time. We went in to say good buy. She had kidney failure. My mind raced, all that I know and I could do nothing for our little dog, our friend. Sometimes she would lay her ears a certain way and she would look like a little donkey. Donkey dog we would call her. She did not seem to mind. I don't really remember much after our good-buy. I sat in her yard for a short while in the shade. She would have been in the sun. Our little black donkey dog. Darin's friend and confidant for 11 plus years. So short is this time on our planet.

We race along and occasionally something happens to remind us time is short. We will miss you sweet pea. You go to the great hunt. No collars, or leads. No one calling you to come, don't go to far. We will love you forever! Until we meet again, we love you.

We have a musical line up almost complete and still looking for artists who want to attend and show off their works. This is the time of year that has craft shows, art shows and festivals blooming all over the country side. Make a day of it!

Water Color

Some time ago, June 2009, I had a very talented guest stay here. She would deny it, but don't listen to her; she is just modest. She and her husband were here for two days. They came to relax and see the wolves. While they were here, Anne sat in the back yard with pad in hand. I am not sure if she sketched anything out, or just started right in, but when she finished it was a water color. An amazing work of art done in just a few hours time! Anne gave me that lovely piece which has joined the few works I have actually hung on my wall. Thank you Anne. I am sorry it has taken my so long to post this. I hope you and Bill will come back to have a glass of wine with me, visit the wolves, and yes just relax. Until we meet again. Thank you. Dawn

Back again

Well the cement guy was actually here to take care of a step repair. No biggy. I just did not know he was coming. So much to do, so little time. Sigh. Anyway. I am working on my barn. No I am not renovating it. I am just repairing it. It will be rustic when I am done, but we can still have weddings outside and have a place to go when it rains. Yeaaaaaa! So we did the siding, and now we are putting doors back up where they belong, and giving our pigions eviction notices. I want to get it all closed up before sping when birds come to make their nests inside my barn. It gets so messy in there, and you would not want to be walking around in there during that time. Let me tell you. Yuck!

We can also have a nice indoor place for our artists during the music and art with the wolves too. I am excited. So when you are here, don't forget to take pictures of what we are doing and the general surroundings, so when you come back you can tell me what has changed!

The New Year is upon us. I sit in the kitchen looking out the window. The snow has been washed away. Only a small bit remains on the edegs. Its clear with a slight breeze. I wounder what the new year will bring? We have so many projects started here not just at the B&B but on the farm and the sanctuary. There is the barn, and the gift shop and the new enclosures. We want to do more fundraisers for the wolves, and have weddings, and maybe even take a vacation. Ha! Hey whats this, I see out my window a concrete truct. Where are they going? Gotta go. d

Searching for Food and Good Atmospher

Darin and I get to go out maybe once a month to dinner. Sunday night, it had been a particularly long day. Neither of us wanted to cook, so we went out. Where do you want to go? I hate that question! I don't know, lets look in the phone book. No, to many to skim through and to many pizza places to skim over. I grabbed the news paper, Lititz Record Express, on the back page is a Dining Out section. A quick scan revealed a place we had not been. Union Barrel Works, Reamstown PA. Hummmm. We went (a 25 minute drive), we walked in and our first impression was clean, well lit, nice music. We were greeted almost immediately and were told that the dining room was closed, but that the bar menu was still available. BAR MENU! We almost walked out right there, but -- OK let me look at the menu. WOW, this is not your normal bar food, there are things on here not fried. So we stayed. We discovered this place makes their own beer, and has a wonderful inexpensive sampler. Mind you we are not connoisseurs, but impressed we were. The food? Also very good, the servings proportioned well, and the service friendly and knowledgeable. I will definitely recommend this place to my guests.

A "Chocolate for Charity" event, the Lititz Chocolate Walk brings together some of the regions most talented chefs and candy makers for a fun and unique way of raising money for local charities. Walkers with button and punch card in hand, follow their maps through historic downtown Lititz where chocolate treats are given out at each of the more than 20 stops. Some patrons refer to it as "trick or treat for grownups" while others just enjoy the chance to sample chocolate goodies and enjoy the ambiance of our lovely community. I recently got an email from a guest who was vacationing here with her husband. They were here at my home for three days. The guest made no mention that something displeased her until today. But she is not here today, she checked out yesterday. She is at home and the complaint came by email. I can't fix something if I don't know it is broken. I can't help you if you don't tell me. Telling me after the fact is very much appreciated, but you do not benefit from it. Only those that come after will benefit. Please tell me while you are here, then I may try to make YOUR stay more enjoyable. I say MAY because you just can't please everyone. I love what I do, I love the many different people that come. I love sharing my home, and the stories that come along with it.

All are welcome. While here, please feel free to turn a light on if it is off. We should all try to conserve energy where we can. Please ask if there is something you need. Ice? Cookies? Conversation? Games? Tour the wolf sanctuary? Just ask, I will do what I can.

I haven't been here in a while. I mean blogging. I meant to, but it just gets later in the day, then all I want to do is sleep. Go figure. Anyway, Darin has been surfing the auction waive, and has come across some drinking glasses just like the ones we use for our breakfasts. WOW! I have been short on both large and small for months. Maybe more like a year. So there he was at midnight one evening and I hear, hey come look at this. Okay I am right beside him reading a magazine, or maybe I was doing dishes. :-) I scoot over and look over his shoulder there one was sitting in a little box with a bunch of other glasses. We need to go! I say. Go we did, the auction was in Maryland, and it started at 3pm. It was a huge action and it should have started earlier for as much as was there, we went we got the glass and we got home at 1am. It should be that easy, but I am only learning how to bid, and I got a little shy, and there went my glass to another lady for $10. Humph! Well Darin saved the day, he walked over to the lady and offered her $10 and she accepted. Yeaaaaa, he is so wonderful, and so loving. The glass is now safely washed and has joined the breakfast ranks with its cousins.

Then we saw another auction with 2 of the same glasses. We went and watched and waited and when they came up I got them -- no hesitation this time. $1 the two glasses are mine, and so was a bunch of other stuff I did not need, but it was in the lot.

I am thrilled. I now have 14 glasses in my set again. I need 4 of the small ones, any help is appreciated. I will post a photo soon. Thanks! Dawn

PS, I am not sure what type of glasses they are so if you recognize the style I would appreciate you letting me know.

Vegan Cuisine

Vegan Cuisine. I have called many restaurants in Lancaster County and the surrounding area, and find most places serve salads. Maybe veggie burgers or hummus. Boring! My breakfasts could be anything from a vegan waffle to Quinoa cooked in vegetable broth and wrapped in a vegan crape with a tomatoes and white bean sauce with chili powder and other spices.

I want to be able to send my guests to places that have the same need to broaden their menus as I do. I absolutely LOVE to cook, and when I go out I want GOOD food. Cafe Chocolate in Lititz does a wonderful job taking care of dinners for those looking for more then just a lettuce leaf on a plate or a pile of noodles with marina sauce. Granted there is nothing wrong with salads and pasta, I am just frustrated. I want more for my guests.

Can some one please tell me if they know of a restaurant that serves up dishes that are vegan friendly? Not just vegetarian, but vegan.

Unplug and Unwind

Did you ever notice that you have to do something before you can do something else? Sigh, so many responsibilities and very little time. Take a moment and just appreciate each other. Leave the cell phone in the car, your lap top at home, and god knows what you use to connect and communicate with the world.

You will not want to use them here. This is a time to unplug and unwind. Your obligated by your senses to set aside the world and relax. You just can't help yourself. My home just wraps itself around you and you feel at ease, at home and far away from those not so little annoyances that creep into your life and raise your blood pressure, making you just want to scream -- WHAT ABOUT MEEEEEE!

Here at Speedwell Forge the wolves will beckon you to think of a more simple life just for a moment, escape. Close your eyes and listen....birds, bull frogs, sounds of nature. Watch our cats play or the water flow by. Serenity, not just a dream a reality. The colors, the shades of green intoxicating. Shuuuu, what was that? That's your heart silly, a quiet beating, a slight smile. Ahhhh. Take time to breath. Take time for a DEEP breath. Soak in the whirl pool, slip on your robe and relax.

Natures Melodey

It was just lovely last night. Darin the dogs and I went for our evening walk. The sky seemed a bit over cast, but the air was warm and dry. I lovely evening for a walk. We should have set up the tent and slept out, it would have been perfect. As we walked bull frogs and tree frogs serenaded us, while the fireflies lit up the trees. Ahhh Christmas in June. Another week and the trees will truly sparkle. As we returned home and sat on the porch, we could still hear the frogs from the pond.

I made breakfast today for four people, talked on the phone to folks for the wolf sanctuary and the bed and breakfast and fielded some personal calls for personal projects. Checked the email, answered some email. I did laundry: washed, dried, ironed and folded. I cleaned two rooms and fluffed one, and vacuumed the second floor. Brushed the cats, and brushed my hair. I had to take a break you know. :-) I did the dishes, visited with guests, and baked cookies. I shared the cookie doe with a guest. Okay, she got to clean the bowl and the blenders. I did more dishes. Changed the cat box and talked to a photographer on the phone about an article that they are doing on the B&B. Made some appointments, and oh I don't know -- there should be more because it is almost 7pm and I feel like I did not do anything! Oh well there is always tomorrow. Breakfast is at 9am -- see you there.

What I did today in Lancaster County PA

Oh my I can't say this enough, I love Lancaster County Pennsylvania! I love the people in my hometown of Lititz, and I love the folks that come stay at my Bed and Breakfast. Today I got up, made breakfst for two wonderful folks, did the dishes, answered some emails, did some room maintenance, stipped a room and did the laundry. Okay I am still doing laundry. Made another reservation (not complaining!) and now back to the garden for another round with the creepers. My cats, Fritz and Scappy, are of course working with me (I think). They are helping to weed, but I don't think they know the difference between my tomato plants and my weeds. Oh well, at least they are keeping me company.

So yesterday I was working on by books in the office when Sherry came up and asked if something was wrong with my cat. Which one? Fritz, his eye looks funny. Well he had been out all night and he was chasing a big tom cat last time I saw him. He probably got a little scratch, but I went to investigate anyway. There he was looking all pitiful on the porch step. I got down to give him a closer look and his eye was closed, and there was something stuck at the corner. I little piece of wood. I went to remove it, and realized it was not just stuck there, but stuck in the socket.

I my god! Okay remain calm, don't want to freak him out. Give it a little tug, its just there. It couldn't be stuck too deep. He seems fine otherwise. No its not coming, thoughts racing! Remain calm, remain calm. Call the vet, no number, its the weekend....luckily the vet had been on the property earlier and the sanctuary had the doctor's cell phone. A call was placed and she was here within the hour. She assessed the situation, gave the stick a good yank and out this inch and half piece of wood emerged. Yuck! Ouch!!! Oh my poor baby boy! I looked at the doctor -- is he going to be ok??? Well his eye seems to be intact, but time will tell there is too much swelling.

Trees!!!

Darin and I have started to repopulate the grounds with trees. We started with pine - Norwegian spruce to be a little more specific. 300 of the little suckers -- 18 inches tall and hopefully growing! 100 plus planted and going....here is a shot of one -- I will show a picture of this little guy every year, or a relative if he does not make it. Making of a Wedding Site

20 years in the making, a building that had to either get a new roof or disappear. My granpa built it to hold his tractors and farm impliments. But back as far as I can remember there was never a roof. Just beams, then there were no beams. We talked to the powers that be while the mansion was under restoration. New roof? Sure you can put a new roof on, but FIRST (hummmm, I love hearing those words)you have to have an engineer redesign the roof, call the township and get a water retention plan for all that water your going to displace and dig trenches around the building to catch all that displaced water so it can seep back into the ground. My question is -- if the water hits the roof and flows down to the ground, isn't it going to do that anyway?

Well we looked into different roofs. A green roof seemed the best idea. But the cost of the engineers seemed to out way saving the eye soar that this cement block building had become.

So down it came, April 2009. John and Darin went to work on a clowdy day with their skid loaders and bachoe.

Wanted

Are you able to go up and down stairs? Can you do laundry, iron and fold without breaking a sweat? Do you love to clean, take great pleasure in a sparkling clean bathroom. Consider it a job worth doing, when no one else is around or watching over your shoulder? Then this is the place for you. Its been 4 months and we have not been able to find someone who can clean three rooms, fluff two and get most if not all of the laundry done in 6 hours. Its a thankless job. No one really thinks about the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. The countless hours that go into making sure sheets are flat, pillows fluffed, floors shine and bathrooms sparkle. Not to mention common areas and private areas.

We who live it think about. Ruth always said anyone could do her job. Sherry and I disagree. NO not anyone can do her job. You have to care, you have to want to do more then less. We are looking for that special someone who loves to clean! You see you have to love what you do to leave a bit of that love behind in everything that you touch so when the guest walks in, they feel it. The room just screams at you - RELAX, TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF (oh ya did that already) AND STAY AWHILE. We need someone who gets it. This is not just a job, this is an adventure!

Yes we are a bit eccentric and yes we do work 24/7 but that is all part of the B&B claim to fame. WE INVITE someone to take part in this grand adventure. Come work with us, and be part of making people happy -- smiles are contagious.

The call of Spring

I heard it a few weeks ago, but didn't believe it. The call of Spring. I couple geese flew over, making their unmistakable honking. Here comes warmer weather I thought to myself. That thought quickly faded away as the sunshine was replace by clouds and rain. Then snow and thirty degree weather. Burrrr. Will this ever end. Silly really, this is a cycle I seem to repeat every year. I love the winter, then I can't wait until it ends. This year seemed a bit more then hurry and get warm as the price of fuel soared then came down for no apparent reason then up it goes again. Anyway I digress. The geese are in numbers now. Spring is on the way. The days are getting longer, the days are getting warmer. I can't wait!!! Flowers will be popping up, in fact they are already peeking through! With the warmer days coming. There is much on the list of things to do. Keep an eye on the blog. There is much on the horizon from weddings to alternative energy.

What's happening now? Mud Sales! What is a mud sale? Fire company sales have been a regular event here in Lancaster County since the mid-1960's. These auctions help local volunteer fire companies raise much-needed funds.

The late Winter and early Spring dates work out best for local farmers because they have more time available before the Spring planting. Since many of the items are sold outside during potentially muddy Spring conditions, these events have affectionately become known as "mud sales".

Often auctions are held both inside and outside simultaneously. Sometimes numerous auctions take place at the same time throughout the grounds.

The items sold vary from auction to auction and include a wide variety of donated goods and consignment merchandise. Auctioned items often include furniture, craft items, quilts, building materials, livestock, buggies and carriages, tools, farming supplies and equipment, garden items, and much more. Plus, lots of good food. Come and enjoy!

Tea at the Mansion

It was scheduled before Christmas and confirmed in January. When did I do my menu? February 21, 2009. When is the tea? 12 noon February 28, 2009. I have been given magazines, books and recipes. Tonight I sit going through them and WOW there is so much to choose from.
How much should I make?

Well the day has arrived and here is the menu:

Fresh fruit cup
Cucumber and dill triangles / Sun dried tomato scones with clotted cream pine nuts and basil / Ham and Cheese Panini
Butternut Squash soup
Cherry Chocolate scones / Lemon Poppy Scones with Lemon Curd / and Pumpkin bread wedges
Four layer Chocolate Cake
Apple spice tea / White tea tangerine / Breakfast tea

Sherry came in early and helped build the sandwiches and prepare the tea. Then she took off to start preparing the rooms for the folks checking in that day. Darin cleaned the dishes from breakfast. I started putting the dishes together for the rest of the tea, and Patty saved us by helping to serve. :-) It all went very well! We had a smashing good time. When the ladies all left to take a tour of the wolf sanctuary, I headed for the Boy's room, it was 2:15 pm. I cleaned it and Sherry did the finishing touches (vacuum and candy) just as the front door opened and in walked our first check in for the day. The guests for the Boy's room. Wheww.

The folks for the Paymaster did stop by earlier just to say hello, but their room was not ready. I gave them a map and direction and they said they would be back sometime later.

Breakfast that day was nine, with two opting to stay in their cottage. They made their own breakfast and the other seven came in for a lovely breakfast of quiche, baked apple and home made granola -- Yummy.

I think I will take a nap now. :-)

Its really just an excuse for a really great bunch of ladies to get together and appreciate each others company. That is what we did at Speedwell Forge today! What a day. Breakfast was at 8am. The usual time, 7 guests came to the table - and two opted out for a quiet breakfast in their cottage (self made). We chatted and visited and had a grand breakfast, then all went their own way and so did I. A mad dash to the kitchen that is, to start putting together what would be lunch for 12 woman.

Wolf Song

I was priming some moldings for the kitchen in the Paymaster. I had finished and was on my way back to the house for the night. And off in the distance the wolves started howling. It was beautiful. It sounds so distant and mournful and beautiful all at the same time. I wonder what they are saying. I will always wonder.

Writing right

I am going to write in this blog if it kills me. I have never been a big writer. In fact I was a paralegal for 16 years and I am not sure I know how to write. Ok okay! I know how to write facts, but add a little puff, and I want to take it right out. So many people tell me to just write as I was speaking. But you know that is a little hard for me, I am way to wordy. I tend to ramble on just to make sure you really get what I am saying. Then I back track because I remembered that there was more to tell. Oh I will get the hang of this. I have years to practice and all of you to practice on while I hone this skill.

My mom is an excellent writer. She writes letters for the Wolf Sanctuary and folks love them. They are all in third party, and usually the third party is a wolf. But they are creative and tell a story. She is brilliant really. While staying at the B&B you may even bump into her. She lives just down the driveway and to the right. I love her death. But I digress. I was complaining in my own little way that I want to write in my blog and I really don't know what to write about - sooooo I am just going to write about what ever and you can tell me what you think through comments. Ruthless at the B&B

We have been open for a little over two years. Ruth, Darin, and I have been here from the beginning, and Sherry came not to long after. We have watched the B&B come alive and grow. We have worked hard together to shape a class act. We have had our growing pains, fun and laughs as well as tears. Well I guess there will be more growing pains and a few more tears. We bid farewell to our Ruthy. Our sparkle and joy, our always ready to lend a hand has been claimed by the great out doors. Yes, she is leaving us. Why? Well its just she is a people person and there are no people to talk to while making the rooms clean. So off she goes to Delaware to work three days a week at a farmers market. Humff!

Funny how things go. Last year, when Ruthy was going away for a few days she wrote a small book of what to do in each room, so we could get by without her. Darin came up with a title -- "Ruthless at the B&B." She didn't take kindly to the title at first, but then it dawned on here that it meant B&B with no Ruthy (nothing so bad as she may have pondered). Well, February 1, 2009, we shall be truly Ruthless at the B&B.

We bid farewell to our friend and confidant. May the sun shine bright above your stand at the market, and you find your happy place.

For those of us left behind, we shall continue to make the mansion and cottages sparkle. But occasionally we will stop and sniffle just a little.

Decorating for Christmas

Thank you to Ruth and Sherry for all their hard work here at the B&B. The place sparkles because of them. Thank you to Rachel and Ruth for the home made wreathes. As always they are lovely. We did not get the decorating done by December 1st this year. We were not on any tours, and I was determined to do some of it myself. Last year I got to do some of the tree. This year, Darin and I did the tree, the foyer and stair railing and I did the little decorations in each guest room. The cottages, Darin did the lights on the trees and I decorated them. It was fun and relaxing. Next year maybe we will have a decorating party.

Winter

It's just beautiful out side. The ice is just coating the trees, a light sprinkling of snow coats the grounds, and a definite chill is in the air. Did I say chill, its down right cold! What better time for Christmas to be here. Perfect for baking cookies, and cakes. Putting together fireside picnic baskets and warm winter packages. Winter is truly here! :-)

What will the new year bring? We are going even more green. Switching to 7th Generation products for laundry and dishes. We will be putting our back porch back on, and completing the privy and maybe even the chicken coup! Keep an eye on us -- pictures should be popping up soon! Oh and we will definitely be getting an outside gas and firewood boiler!

Well gotta run, I have gift certificates to mail, and deposits to process. And ya, I have basket to finish for some very much in love guests coming home for the evening.

What we do,

We strive very hard to do our part to respect our environment and be a good steward of the land. Here's a few steps that we take at the inn:

Buy local produce from farms - especially the Amish and Mennonite farms
Have a Sani-Jet whirlpool tub in both our cottages and an Aquatic Whirlpool tub in the mansion - no need to refill with water to sanitize as there are no pipes in which water can settle.
Recycle all #1 and #2 plastic, papers, and metal
Take used egg cartons back to the egg farmers to reuse
Have Low E storm panels in windows with UV protection to save on A/C and heating costs and cuts down on the need to repaint or refinish walls and furniture
Use CF bulbs where possible
Recycle used magazines
Newspapers are reused for animal bedding
Re-use all office paper as scrap
Use home grown herbs
Shop locally and support small stores
Buy local products like flour, sausage, chicken, breads, cheese instead of brands that have been trucked across the country
Use energy star appliances
Combine our car trips
Use front-load water-saving washer and dryer
Do not use any chemicals or sprays on flower gardens or grass
Use vinegar to clean our windows
Re-use furniture - all of our antiques have been lovingly used by other generations
Regularly donate to Goodwill or have garage sales instead of throwing out
Use bagless vaccum
Make homemade granola for breakfast which helps cut down on packaging
Turn off lights in the house to conserve energy and ask show guests where the light switches are located
Keep heat settings low and lower in unused rooms to conserve fuel
Reuse water from dehumidifiers for ironing and watering plants
We use a Solar dryer when weather permits (clothes line)

My day, and that’s everyday, starts early in the morning when I get up to make breakfast for my guests. But today was the first day I had off in weeks. And I am not complaining! But when this happens, I’m never quite sure what to start doing first. I could paint, pull weeds, or work in my office. One thing for sure today is the HVAC guy is coming for the annual maintenance.

What I did not expect was a (surprise for me) letter from my bank telling me that although I’ve been making payments on my debt on time, the balance is now due—to the tune of many thousands of dollars. I’ve been working hard at paying off my debts, and this one, now due far sooner than I expected, is next to the largest. I feel undone!

I tell guests to dream big, shoot for the stars, push yourself to the limits, and test yourself regularly. Now my testing time has come, and I find myself talking to God more and more. Is He listening? I’m not sure how many more tests I can take. God only knows!

Anyway, as I was typing along here, the phone rang. It was a past guest traveling through the area again, deciding to spend the night. Wow, I guess He is watching, even as I write, and listening!

A recent guest wrote in the room journal, “Cats, Books, Wolves, Bed and Breakfasts, Life IS good.” And I can only agree!

Flowers are popping up every where, and there is so much to do now that the days are longer and the sun is warmer. By next week my itineraries will be done and I want everyone to know that it will have lots of EVENTS that you can use to plan your stay - or you are welcome to relax right here at the B&B on the grounds. Pull up a chair under a tree and listen to the birds. The peepers have been out for weeks now and they are just lovely to listen too. Soon the lightening bugs will come alive and it will be xmas in the trees. Beautiful green glittering lights will float through the air. Sigh. I love it here. Its just lovely.

Known among antique lovers as one of the “not to be missed events of the year,” the Lititz Historical Foundation’s Annual Antique Show and Sale returns on Friday, June 27, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, June 28, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dozens of top-of-the-line dealers from all along the east coast will be offering sensational pieces. Before or after the show, be sure to stop by the Foundation’s Bake Sale tables, located at the entrance to the Antique Show and Sale. Here guests will find homemade goodies from pies and pastries to cookies, cakes and candy. The convenient location for the show is the John Bonfield Elementary School at the corner of Front and Oak streets in Lititz, seven miles north of Lancaster on Route 501, then east on Route 772 (East Main Street); from there, just follow the signs. Free parking will be available. Proceeds from this volunteer effort support the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the Foundation’s historical properties: the Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Museum and Gift Shop at 137-145 East Main Street, Lititz.

Two Years? So much to do....

Almost two years have passed since we opened! How could that be? Christmas was just here, then the cold seemed to go on forever, and rain and more cold. We filled the two thousand gallon propane tanks for the 4th time and I thought - we will never make it at this pace. Will it ever get warm? Then just last week it did. Cold one day and then it was just warm. Just like that. Humph! How does this happen! Now I am trying to get the garden ready and the flowers planted and the dogs brushed and my goodness there is much to do. We are having our first real spring lightening and thunder storm of the year, and it feels just like last year all over again. Only this time I am ready! I have unplugged much of the phone and computer system and I don't have a switch board to blow up this year, so if the lightening creeps up the phone line this year - well who knows.

Anyway, we are getting ready for a beautiful summer and a busy one at that. The B&B and Wolf Sanctuary are preparing for a Music and Art with the Wolves. It will be an all day 11am to 9pm event. With music, and art and hay rides and face painting and food. The acts booked so far are Scott Galbraith, the Reese Project and the Carmitchell Sisters. I am so jazzed (no pun intended). I can't wait to see how it all pans out. We have had a wonderful response from local artists and have even started talking with the local news papers and magazines to let everyone know. Anyone have any ideas on marketing please feel free to post it, or email me. Thanks -- I will post again soon all the preparations. Thanks goes out to all the volunteers at the Wolf Sanctuary for all their hard work and dedication. Of course I thank Ruthy and Sherry for all of their hard work here at the B&B too. They really make us shine. ;-)

The other day I was over at the Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, just four miles east of Ephrata along Rout 322, and I picked up one of their cards. (Their pretzels are yummy too!) On the back was this message:

First Fridays are a great time to experience downtown Lancaster! Over 60 galleries, museums, shops, and restaurants extend their hours. Many artist premiers and openings. The First Friday Trolley operates from 6-8 p.m. This is a LancasterARTS event.

Each month Downtown Merchants are happy to announce great family activities and entertainments, free and open to the public, in stores and venues throughout the downtown shopping area. Every 3rd Friday, Downtown Ephrata's shops offer something special, just to celebrate the fact that it's Friday! Each month offers something different, including entertainment, refreshments, and special sales. Hook up with friends, enjoy a latte, chill will the sounds of an acoustic guitar, or just SHOP.

White Christmas, maybe

It’s snowing! It’s December! Yes! Will we have a white Christmas? Wait, it’s not quite December, but almost. The bed and breakfast is on the Coleman Christmas open-house tour, and we have to be ready by December 1. That means the entire house must be cleaned and decorations put up. We all have our own ideas about decorating, and Ruth and I have not had help before. Ruth rallied Char and Rachel into action, but they forgot to tell me the details and just went about with their plans. I loved it, and I hated it. They were going full steam ahead, and they were brilliant. Everything was lovely. Except I did not get to help. I know, I know, there is always so much to do upstairs—the books, the bills, the Christmas gifts for guests and family. Sigh, I just wanted to join in the fun, so what did I do? I sulked, I took photos of the ladies decorating, I made cookies, I worked on the books, and I shared opinions . . . for better or worse! At 5:00 p.m. I told everyone to go home and decorate her own house. Then Darin and I put up the tree in the parlor. It was wonderfully quiet and fun. We put the lights on and then an assortment of balls and glass icicles. We got spinners for the crystal decorations, and we put birds in the real bird’s nest that came from the Christmas tree from last year. It was lovely—and a perfect evening to an otherwise hectic day. Many thanks to Ruth, Char and Rachel for making the house sparkle. You are the bestest of the bestest!

So, there was no snow, but the tour folks came, and everyone enjoyed eating the cookies and candy laid out for them. As usual I did not get pictures of the visitors. I just talked to all who entered the kitchen—and there were many.

We send warmest wishes from our home to yours for Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to all! Don’t forget that winter is a wonderful time to drive to our house for a night or two of peaceful sleep and hearty breakfasts.

When I was young....

“When I was young…”

When I was young I lived with my mom, dad, brother, and sister. My Grandma and Grandpa, whom I called Papa, lived in the big house just down the driveway from our house, on the right. I had plenty of space to play on the large farm, and of course I had chores. My Papa would come out and watch me play. He told me stories, too, none of which I can recall completely. I loved him dearly. I didn’t see Grandma as much. She led a glamorous life from afar with her friends and Papa. I would visit their home and pretend I was a movie star on my grandma's chaise lounge. I dreamed that I would someday have huge ballroom parties of my own in the dining room, and everyone would come, wearing beautiful ball gowns and powdered wigs, lovely tailored suits and carrying ornamental canes. There would be live string music and fabulous food.

But the days and years drifted by. Life happened as I came and went to the house that had become empty with my grandparents’ deaths. The house sat and waited for people to come back and once again fill the empty halls with laughter and music that would drift up the grand staircase and beyond.

The year 2005 came, and that vision became a reality, a brutal one at times. Time seemed to stop for me as I stepped off the plane from California and headed for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I was home for good. For better or worse, I was stepping back to go forward. Plenty of work filled my days as I labored with the restoration crew to bring the house back to life in the 21st century. There were tasks to be done and battles to be fought.

And now it’s nearly two years since the house became a home again. People have found us. Life is made simple here for our bed and breakfast guests. Many have said that their visit here with us in scenic northern Lancaster County has given them a quiet respite away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives.

Two B&Bs with wolves?

Would you believe it, but there is another B&B with a wolf sanctuary, and it’s in Montana! I actually discovered this in October while doing wolf awareness research. I did a keyword search and started looking over the flotsam that always pops up, and lo and behold, there it was. They have actually been around as a B&B and sanctuary for quite some time and did not know about us. I discovered this when I called to let them know we were here and to maybe think about changing their advertisement just a bit which said they were the only B&B and wolf sanctuary in the United States. Check out this place called Howlers at http://www.howlersinn.com/ They still say they are the only one, and I am happy to let everyone know about them, but I must say they are not the only one!

I have no idea what their problem is, but 7 times out of 10 they have double booked me and then said that it was my problem not theirs. That is more then half the time! I must say that I am sick of their not reading the data correctly. If you are booking a room, don't use hotels.com. They can not be trusted!

Historic Preservation Award

Last year Speedwell Forge was entered as a nominee for a variety of preservation awards. The responses came back telling us to apply again when we are finished with the restoration. That could be several years from now. The full restoration is actually a three-phase process. The first was restoring the mansion, the Summer Kitchen, the Paymaster’s Office, and the spring house/workshop, which have all been completed. Phase two will be to finish the unique stone privy, which already has a brand-new roof, and has been repointed. And phase three will be the required replacing of the full-length porch on the back of the house and rebuilding the chicken coop. (We’ll all be fighting to gather the daily fresh eggs for breakfast.)

In spite of not having all those phases completed, the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County has recognized and honored Speedwell Forge for the hard work that went into breathing new life into the mansion and some of the surrounding out buildings. On November 13, 2007, we received the 2007 C. Emlen Urban Award for Preservation.
